Obviously, due to its tiny size the breed could offer little help in hunting deer or any other big animal. This made some people think that the word "Beagle" originated from a French word "beighs" which means "of little value." However, this opinion is not the only one. A Celtic word "beag" meaning "small" could also be the source of the breed's name.

At the end of the 19th century the Beagle appeared in America. It was registered and since that time, the American Kennel Club strives for maintaining the purity of the breed. A bunch of clubs are organized all over the world to deal with breeding, raising Beagles and involving the owners in various activities such as competitions, hunting, agility, etc.

Please, note that before starting agility a veterinarian is supposed to give a green light to your Beagle. Though the obstacles are designed with special care in order to lesson the chance of injuries, occasional accidents do occur especially if a dog did not get adequate training. Moreover, this sport presents jumps that are harmful for puppies and Beagles with extra weight.
