Beagles attract thousands of people of all ages in many countries. And these are not just mere words. Statistics show that in 2001 this breed took the fifth place among all registered dogs leaving behind Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles, Boxers, Chihuahuas and all those who have a long way to go to acquire the Beagles popularity.

Having a Beagle as a pet is very rewarding to its owner. It brightens up your life and fills it with many joyful moments. Its agility is one of the most acknowledged features provoking some trouble, yet exciting walks and game hours. It is interesting to note that a Beagle can adjust to almost any surrounding, should it be an apartment or a roomy yard.

The dog's standard is strictly adhered to by many owners and maintained by clubs together with The American Kennel Club. As for Great Britain, the standard varies some. The Beagle is a small hound reaching 13-16 inches in height and weighing approximately 20-30 pounds. Ears are long and therefore demand an owner's special attention. The coat is supposed to be rather short and smooth. The tail is short bending towards the back. Overall, the Beagle is muscular though compact.

Color: Black, red and white, tan and white, and some other color patterns. Talbot Hounds thought to be the ancestors of the Beagle obviously prompted some of the personality features of the breed. It was quick, clever, had a good sense of smell and therefore was used as a hunting dog. Later the foxhound grew to be popular in England and replaced the Beagle. However, as time passed their friendly character, non-aggressive behavior and liveliness evoked much interest and played a significant role in the distribution of Beagles.
